Gripper and QTI Sensor

For a final project my "boe-bot" group decided to mount a QTI Sensor and Gripper kit to out robot.
Currently we are installing the gripper kit and next will be the QTI.
Our question pertains to the coding.
We have the sample code right now for the QTI Sensor, and would like to know what we would need to
"code" to make the boe-bot follow eletrical tape, then stop at a certain point to pick up an empty soda can, and then
go back to the trail of the electrical tape.
Could this be done by just adding to the sample QTI code (ill attach it, typed it from the instructions)?
Any help would greatly be appreciated.
Thanks
