A simple, but a tad crude, line-follower can be made using just IR detectors and IR leds supplied with your Boe-bot. See the book "Robotics with the Boe-bot" which should have come with your 'bot -- the sections on the IR detectors have some examples of pointing the leds and detectors down in order to sense black on white.

We are doing this project for my class, we used sensors that just detect change in light for us we use every colour but black (Which gives a value of 1 I think) is what the bot should follow so we did it as so
Sensor Line Sensor
So whenever it touches the line (You need to program it) it will move wheel 1 and two at the same time to correct it till it makes it so it is not on the black, hope this helped
You could also do what Zoot was saying, but mout the IR Pairs like on the Scribble Bot, I dont know if Parallax sells it anymore, but what it was, the ir was mounted on the bottom, like so
