Can I use an ADC to quantify a basic phototransistor for IR detection

My understanding of a phototransistor, is that it is a current increases depending on how much light·device recieves?

If that is true, can I run the current from the phototransistor straight to an ADC or through a resistor to an ADC to measure the amount of light being recieved?

Also, is·the frequency used with·an IR emmiters and the IR wavelength related, or the frequency is just·so the IR recievers can work in ambient or sun light?

Thanks
