All you really need is a SPDT (single pole double throw) switch in any configuration of your choosing. They come with solder tabs, screws, flag terminal ends, and many others. Here's how you wire it.

What is often called COM (common terminal) will be your OUTPUT. Then you just hook each of the other wires onto the end terminals. If that's not clear, let me know, and I'll try to give you a better wiring description.

    Regards,

When all else fails, try inserting a new battery.

It sounds like a simple NPN transistor might do what you're looking for. Look at http://www.kpsec.freeuk.com/trancirc.htm·about the middle of the page, "Using a transistor as a switch" for the circuit description and help choosing the components you'll need to make it work properly while protecting your microcomputer.
