eb500 no caret

Following the instructions from the parallax website, I am still not able to get this trival task working. No caret in the hyperterminal and when i type 'ver all' it prints onto the hyperterminal as 'vveerr aall'. I believe I need the eb500 to send an ACK command to the hyperterminal to show that it acknowledges commands from terminal.
What's up with this?
