Robbie goes to Kindergarten (DanceBot powered by Propeller Gyro Accelerometer K

My daughter just started Kindergarten and brought me and my robot along for show and tell.
Check out the writeup here.
The dancebot uses a Propeller to process lots of sensors:
  • camera,
  • compass,
  • ceramic gyro,
  • accelerometer, and
  • quadrature encoder.
I use all 8 cogs to:
  • debug with ViewPort,
  • decode encoder pulses,
  • drive 2 h-bridges,
  • grab video,
  • process video,
  • perform kalman filtering, and
  • control the robot with fuzzy logic.
It balances on 2 wheels and uses vision to find where a special pattern is held. Dancing with the robot is very intuitive- it copies what you do.
Here's another article.
Over Christmas it'll balance for 3 weeks straight inside a museum display in the middle of Christchurch- come for a visit!

Yup, New Zealand... Great place to be, raise kids, and build robots! Contact me if you're in the area...

Across the Tasman - about 10 days sailing from the Gold Coast (Queensland, Australia). Christchurch is a little cold for us :-) but yes, a nice place!

Bet you got a buz from the kids at the kindy - they would have been so fascinated. (Our daughter teaches kindy and school)

The kids were wonderful with the robot. Funny thing was that most of the questions were similar to the ones asked by fellow engineers/roboticists/students- all except: "did you use a hammer to build it?".

Nope, didn't use a hammer- although I quite often banged my head against the table in frustration!
