Windows drivers for USB232B

Hi y'all --

I have received a great hulking box of Basic Stamp stuff, and I find it useful.· Among the things in the box was a USB232B adapter cable, USB-to-RS232.· This requires drivers, but unfortunately there were no driver CDs in the box.· Can anyone supply drivers?· I need'em for Win98, Win2000, and WinXP.· Thanks!

What's the manufacturer and model # of the cable? Usually the manufacturer has the drivers on their website. If it was sold by Parallax, it probably has an FTDI chip inside and the current driver from Parallax should handle it.

There's no name on it, but your remark caused me to look on the Parallax CD and I installed the driver that was there, which Windows declares to be working. I still can't access the Stamp on that machine (a Toshiba laptop with Win98), but I think that's probably an incompatibility between the Stamp editor and either Win98 or the Toshiba, because I also can't use the Stamp editor on a real RS232 port on that machine. Perhaps there is a version of the Stamp editor that works in Win98.

There are a couple laptops (Dell) around the house someplace that have Win2000 on'em, and at least one with XP. I'm going to try those next. If any of them work, it will be because you pointed me in the right direction. Many thanks!

The USB-to-RS232 adapter has no name on it -- it's a blue transparent housing with a DB9, on one end of about a four-inch tin-colored shielded cable, and a USB-A connector on the other end. I have come to believe that it is an FTDI chip, as you suggest. It may even have come from Parallax.

Just tried it on a Dell laptop with Windows XP.· Works like a charm.· Going into Device Manager, it says the device is indeed made by FTDI.· Thank you again, Mike.

FTDI does have drivers on their website that work with Win98SE. I'm not positive, but I think some of the more recent versions of the Stamp Editor require Win2000 or later. There have been earlier versions that worked under Win98SE, but I no longer have a copy or a link and they don't support the BS2px.

Interestingl. From the Parallax site I downloaded Version 2.3.9 of the Stamp editor, which the site says is the last version to support Windows before Win2000. On the Toshiba laptop I run Win98SE, but still no soap, either with the USB adapter or with the real RS232 port.

Come to think, I have a BOE-USB here. I think I'll try that on the Toshiba.
