Long Range Distance Finding

Has anyone used the propeller to detect objects further away than parallax sensors work?
A sensor that works 30+ feet (9+ meters)·would be best, it can be either infrared or sonar.

IR with a corner reflector on the object should work. Many years ago I worked on a real-time 3D tracker using that technique.

Sniper king had a long thread about using a laser to detect up to 3? miles... I think that didn't work out though. Search through the forums for laser ranger or some variant there of.

The thought of people running around with lasers bright enough to work as range finders over 3 miles has me decidedly worried.

For me, the past is not over yet.

It was discussed in that thread too... The argument was that it was used/tested in a very remote location, and that all participants had adequate eye protection.

Has anyone had any luck, or misfortune, with anything specific?

    At http://www.acroname.com/robotics/parts/R11-6500.html is
The 6500 Series is an economical sonar ranging module that can drive all SensComp/Polaroid electrostatic transducers with no additional interface. This module, with a simple interface, is able to measure distances from 6 inches to 35 feet. This was formerly made by Polaroid, but is now made by SensComp.

This thread didn't work out, but I thought it was a good idea.
