RFID reader transmitting data when no tag in range

I am using the Parallax RFID reader with an Arduino. The system is working well and transmitting tag id codes as expected. Occasionally I am getting data from the reader when it is active but there is no tag in range. Can any one tell me where this data is coming from, why, and if there is any specific pattern so that I can write code for the Arduino to avoid it. Thanks.
