Ubuntu 8.10

Just wondering if anybody has tried the new version of Ubuntu, and what Parallax software can now be run on it? I am interested in running the SX, and Propeller stuff on Ubuntu, hopefully without to much trouble. I ran the live 64 bit version on my laptop, and it seemed to function OK. I am hoping that some of the experts here will discuss whether the new version is now better suited to run the Parallax software.

Thanks

Ray

    Ray,

Did you get the Parallax SX software to work on Ubuntu ?
I would love to get back to SX/B but when I start up the SX IDE in Wine, no serial ports are found...
    Any pointers ?

For the Propeller I use BST (Brads Spin tool), works great...

[X] I got the Motor hooked up with the H-bridge and the 555 is supplying the PWM.

Since I did a live session, I do not think that the WINE program was installed correctly. When I tried to do the setup of Propeller, and SX IDE, I kept getting a load error, so the Propeller, and the SX IDE never got loaded. I am still trying to decide whether to get rid of VISTA 64 bit off my laptop, I am not a fan of dual boot setups. The other problem that I might have is that my laptop does not have any comm ports, and the USB dongle that I have only support Win XP, so I may not be able to get a comm port availble for SX IDE.

The SX and Propeller software installs fine in Wine, however the problem are the serial and USB ports, no ports are detected.
Since I could not find the ports, no other testing was done...

I run XP in VMWare, it's slower than running natively, on the other hand, the Parallel port now works with my EPROM programmer... wink.gif

    I've been using

    www.virtualbox.org/

It runs all of the MS Windows software I've tried including the Propeller IDE. It wasn't that hard to setup for me but it may be a challenge if yo don't have much computer experience.

Also you still need to own a copy of a Windows operation system and install it on the VM

I just installed Kubuntu 8.10 (I was using xubuntu 8.04 but it refused to boot on my new pc)... get away from it :-(. I used to like KDE 3 but it was too bloated for my taste so I changed first to the openstep based one and then to xfce. I just installed xfce on top of kubuntu. Well, this KDE 4 is not exactly what I want.It seems they copied the worst of winblows and Mac OSX together: dashboard, expose, the start menu, and the fade-out when log-out and some other things I did not discover (did I mention the h

For a test run, I just installed BST (Brads Spin tool), I was surprised that it worked so well·on the Ubuntu install. I did a Spin test file, it seemed to have found the Propeller, and it said it compiled the file. So,·tomorrow I may try a simple blinkLED.spin file, and see if it really works on my Demo board. This looks very promising, I wonder what ver 1.0 will be like?

Now, if somebody came up with a similar solution for SX IDE, I think I would say goodbye to Windows.

I've been using Ubuntu 8.04 for several months now as my XP was so bogged down on my old PC that many daily chores were not pleasant. Ubuntu 8.10 is either just out or still in beta release.· I love Linux as I don't seem to have the kind of hassles that Windows does. Less attacks and not so many scams. Plus I can configure a powerful network for little cost.

In the process of using Linus, I did install WINE in both Fedora and Ubuntu and tested it with all the Parallax IDEs. It works fine for editing and study, but Linux has an entirely different approach to serial ports and the actual programing of the BasicStamp, the Propeller, or the SXes require transfering a copy of the program to a Windows machine.·

There is one 'compiler' that will prepare BasicStamp software for programming in Linux, but it is a second program -- not a full IDE. This is a more traditional approach. Some may say it is less user friendly, but it just a different way.

WINE did have one buggy screen feature that appears to be an incentive to purchase Crossover Linux, the commercial counter part. I tried Crossover Linux and it was seamless, but again without the serial or USB interface needed for programing.

I finally decided to have a dual boot system that has Windows for the occasional need to use Parallax software and have done most of my· computing in Ubuntu which has been great. I think that anyone that really wants to learn computing needs to at least explore Linux as there is a lot of free support and software that will help you advance more quickly. But, there will always be somethings that are available only in Windows. Parallax is very helpful, but their customer base in mainly beginners that are part of the 90% of the world that uses Windows.

At this point, I have a new 64bit Core2 Quad with Vista and I am establishing another dual book setup. I am completely sold on Linux as a better overall system for productive work.
