Are you just doing schematics, or do you need to do PCB layout? Do you need a standard format? Do you need to do any analysis?

Go to ExpressPCB.com and download their tool suite. It is really easy to use and build your own components.
I have a schematic symbol for the Propellor that I'll be glad to post (but the server is not letting me do that at the moment). The PCB symbol library has the 44 pin QFN pad already loaded. I can send it when I get back to the office this PM.

Eagle can do schematics and board layout. There are libraries available for the Parallax products including the Propeller (all three packages are in the library).

edit: The free version limits the schematic to one sheet and the board size is limited also.

There are no power or ground pins on pic below?

They are probably implied, to reduce clutter. They will appear in the PCB if the correct connections to the power and ground nets are made in the schematic.

TinyCAD is supposed to be quite good: tinycad.sourceforge.net/

One way of doing ICs in Eagle, and some other electrical design software, is to break the IC into the Power pins and the other pins. This can reduce clutter on a schematic by placing all the power related components in one part of the drawing and all the logic components as needed. Sort of like talking a multiple gate IC adn breaking it into parts across a drawing.

I can vouch for using Eagle and using the Propeller Library or Parallax library.

    Cannibal,

did you ever post this ExpressPCB schematic symbol for the Propeller? I can't find it anywhere and if you still have it, I'm sure that would make a good quick starting point for a lot of people (including me.... smile.gif )

    thanks,

Diptrace also has a propeller symbol. I'm an Eagle user, but have just recently started playing with DipTrace. It's taking a little time to learn the new software, but so far I like the user interface and the overall design better. The pricing options seem better, and the company itself·seems lot more modern. I asked a few simple pre-purchase questions of the US Eagle distributor and all I received back was a spreadsheet that I am apparantly supposed to "fax" back. That's just so early-90's. DipTrace has a nice website with a paypal button right there.

I'd suggest downloading evaluation copies of the various programs and playing with them for a bit before settling on one. Eagle, Diptrace, and ExpressPCB all have freeware versions that you can try. Make a hasty decision now, and you may end up in my situation -- with several designs that are going to have to be redone in the new software if I decide to make the switch.

Anybody got a recommendation for a PCB manufacturer in the UK - I need to produce a number of prop circuit boards. Cheers

I used Diptrace for a Prop based board and loved it.· Tried Eagle and wasn't a fan, but a lot more people use that than Diptrace.

All - thank you for your responses. I've made my own boards in the past but I'm finding that I have less time and I do not fancy the having the chemicals hanging around.

So as to contribute something about to the original thread I have used FreePCB & Eagle. All packages take a bit of getting use to. Many moons ago I used PCBWizard. I think there is an opportunity out there for someone to create a user-friendly schematic & layout tool.

I'm a fan of AACircuit. Yes, it's only for 'drawing' not for developing. But you don't need any graphics. You only need a fixed pitch font.
