I've hunted around the documentation/forums, because I'd hate to be that guy that asks the same question for the millionth time, but I would like to get a concrete answer (although I think I know what it is)... can an SX uC be programmed without an SX-Key? Or is that pretty much it?

You can use the SX-Key or the SX-Blitz. But you do need a custom programmer.
The SX-Key allows for debugging. The SX-Blitz does not.

Yea, thought so...have a bunch of chips lying around the lab, but of course no programmer to be found.

    Thanks for the prompt response.

Here describes a hardware scheme to program an SX

However, you'll need a copy of the sxisp software made mention in the .pdf.· I don't know were you get a copy of that......
