    Well shut my mouth, You guys are again educating me. After reading much more on this interesting topic it appears that a combination of UV and near-IR sensors do work best.     Well, I'd expect the "package" -- http://www.acroname.com/robotics/parts/R67-UVTRON.html -- to be easier to implement, but yes, that does seem to be what the fire-fighting robot pages are calling out.

    I agree with Allan, unless you want to build your own driver circuit from scratch.

    The OP520 BOB55 mentioned and the R67-UVTRON combination would make an excellent flame detector I think.

    Although I said that it would hopefully work, after looking it over and noticing the price, I think I rather try using IR LED's and see if I can make those work.
