Stronger faster RFID reader

I have a successful little prototype using the Parallax RFID reader, a Stamp II, and a two line LCD display, but in the final version I would like the reader to be able to sense the cards through a thicker material and at a faster rate (cards will fall past reader). Is there another stronger faster reader anyone knows about? or a way to beef up the Parallax reader?
