USB/Serial controller

Hey there, New to electronics but really want to learn, I got a basic stamp homework board, my laptop has no serial port, a friend gave me an adapter to usb, but my laptop wont recognize it, any body has any pointer on how to address this? I would really appreciate it? Thank you for the help in advance.

    Not all USB to serial adapters will work with Stamps. Some don't implement some of the handshaking signals properly. Pretty much all adapters that use the FTDI USB to serial chips will work (and will work with the USB drivers from Parallax). Keyspan's High Speed Serial Adapter will also work but needs to use Keyspan's USB driver.

    By the way, it's really important that you supply a proper subject when you start a thread. If you forget, you can use the pencil icon in the upper right corner of your first message to edit that message and the thread subject line.
