Even with all the money they had, it amazing that all this worked and performed so well. This video shows in a quick way all the little things that had to go right to make this work. Very impressive.

I heard that they use rad hard Xilinx Virtex FPGAs along with VxWorks Wind River. The older rovers may have used 68HCxx microcontrollers, but I'm pretty sure Spirit / Opportunity don't.

One a serious note - theres' loads of good Mars rover media & stuff at www.jpl.nasa.gov (go to the Mars Explorations Rover's then Media)

If you really want to learn how much effort went into it - read the book by Steve Squires - "Roving Mars"

I read somewhere that it uses Xilinx FPGAs, as well.

A lot of the same material is in the IMAX version, Roving Mars, which is worth seeing for the extended discussion on the ground at NASA/JPL about building the rovers.
If you have a pair of 3D glasses, there are photos taken by the rovers posted at marsrover.nasa.gov/gallery/3d/.

I was a little disappointed that the IMAX didn't show more simulated 3D fly by's of the impressive surface features on Mars. I guess because those pictures are derived more from the high resolution stereo cameras on the orbiters.

Look too at the JPL Tumbleweed Rover, which has a BASIC Stamp on board...

Is there really any chance of getting the Mars Rover blueprints? Personally, I doubt it. Can't let America's enemies get our prime research vehicle. We like being the only ones with a certain capbility. Blus, how many pages and pages and pages of prints are there? Sort of sad in a way, that our tax dollars fund so many things that we'll never get to see. Oh Well. Welcome to government...
