NES Connector Update

Hey there,

Just wanted to provide OBC and Co. with an update on the request to get the NES PCB connectors. We're picking them up in China today and we'll have them at Parallax on Tuesday. Below Aristides is opening the box and I've taken a closeup photo of the connectors. Aristides is very hot as you can see - it's 98F here and 70% humidity. I think these connectors will sell at $1.95 each. This isn't cheap, but it's reasonable for a prototype or several. If you need a bucket of them we can make a better deal.

Over and out!

Temps like that are the reason I don't live in Florida anymore. :)
Ken, what does it feel like to get out of a shower, and by the time you get dressed you need another shower? :)

Thanks for the update Ken! There are several of us looking forward to getting our hands on those.

What's the spacing / diameter on the pin headers? They look a little thick for a standard perf board, are you going to mount them on a breakout board?

    They probably won't, but I will smilewinkgrin.gif

I noticed the same thing though, they do look like large pins.

    Hi OBC,

After spending some time in Southern China, you’ll find Florida’s weather very dry and pleasant.

The key to endure the weather over here is to find some shade and hopefully a room with AC. Entering in a lethargic mode could help keep the body temperature low.

Ken volunteer to make a demonstration for you as you can see in the picture below.

    Regards,

The following is a good resource on the NES Controller -- Chapter 6 sample from the "Game Programming for the Propeller Powered HYDRA"

@OBC -- Maybe you want to do a project with an SX28 communicating with the Propeller?
It is kind of like SIP sockets, and single row headers. Can't get enough of those ;) Just pad you order with something like that.

The NES controller is such a great 3.3v human input device and with the Propeller! It is fairly easy to implement and is "retro chic." Too bad that so many of the NES controllers get made into things like belt buckles, etc. Hey, maybe there is a project... Propeller-powered belt buckle that doubles for a game system ;)

A little off topic, but does anyone have a part # or source for the Hydra expansion port connector?

Chuck, this is the vertical one but given this you should be able to find it. http://search.digikey.com/scripts/DkSearch/dksus.dll?Detail?name=S3300-ND

I used this to interface to a hydra expansion board but note its a right angle socket and I believe hydra needs the straight.

I thought I'd mention. I finished an adapter circuit board for these connectors a little while ago. I now realize I never formally announced it. They are now available on uController.com

The Adapter has a socket to plug into a SpinStudio, or there is a 6 pin connector that can be plugged into a solderless breadboard in the same manner as the SD card adapter that many of you are familiar with.

I can vouch for this being a "must have" item for the Propeller.

    Well done Brian!

I've TOO been wondering if there's still a significant game writing/playing community for the propeller. I have not lived up to my own expectations in the past few years and it seems to me that most of the platform hardware necessary to play old propeller games is not being sold anymore... I can't find any more Hydras, Demoboards, etc. :(

That's where you might be mistaken.. :)

It's true, Parallax tends to be a bit more into Propeller machines that either roll, walk, or fly, but Propeller gaming/writing community still exists and is working on interesting projects and tools behind the scenes.

The Hydra can still be purchased from Xgamestation.com.

Propellerpowered's PEB board supports the more common Wii nunchuck controller as well as VGA and TV out for Propeller games.

Also, we are getting ready to launch our new Micromite Companion product (we're filling pre-orders this week) which will allow easy access to Propeller sprites and tiles.

Most of the materials that are relevant to Propeller gaming can be found on our forums, including all the important developments that were posted on the old Parallax Hydra forums.

Edit: I forgot another important Propeller gaming project that is in development right now.. The Lamestation.

XgameStation is still active but seems out of date. Andre LaMothe launched a new website ic0nstrrux http://www.ic0nstrux.com/ which also sells the Hydra

Seems we're out of stock. We custom made this part and kept it in stock for a long time because the minimum order was around 10,000 units.

I can check with our friends in China, though. How many do you need?
