i have been looking at the vs1002 breakout board from sparkfun and noticed that there is this (http://obex.parallax.com/objects/308/) object that says it can read an sd card and control the vs1002 chip, i was wondering since i dont know spin or asm real well, is there a limit to the length of an mp3 it can play, and how does it get a song, does it search for a file name on the sd card and play that or does it search a block of data·

As far as I know there is no limit to how long the mp3 file can be. That said I don't think that I have tested the driver beyond seven minuets, but there is no reason it would not work.

The driver it's self does not read form the SD card. Used in conjunction with fsrw from Tomas Rokicki (obex.parallax.com/objects/92/) it can be used to play mp3 files off an SD card. The example that is distributed with the driver shows one way to do this.
