Dear All,

I found a couple of reference designs using this Parallax product, which seems to be no longer available.
Just curious why this was discontinued?

Regards

Mike.

Don't know, but Altera and its partners still sell Cyclone FPGA kits from $150 on up.
Here is just one Cyclone dev board for sale:

Like a lot of 3rd party products, Parallax may carry them for a time, but drop them when it's clear that there's not enough interest (or sales volume) to justify the costs of carrying them. I suspect that carrying the FPGA kits was an outgrowth of their use in Propeller development.

This was a Parallax-manufactured product. Like Mike said, it was low-volume, high-expense and minimal profit. We started the Cyclone and Stratix boards during a close collaboration with Altera when their educational program was of interest to the company. I imagine that it still is, but our personal contact had moved on to another FPGA development tool company, giving us another reason to end the line.

For developers who were inconvenienced by the discontinued Cyclone products we have provided Gerber/Protel files, BOMs and sources for their own use. At least a couple of customers pursued this option successfully.

Ken, do you have any plans to introduce another FPGA based product? Perhaps with a curriculum ala stamps in class? Perhaps a collaboration with Andre' LaMothe again?

LaMothe has his own CPLD kit, the MACH64. Not exactly FPGA but close enough to start.
Probably only the manual in this kit deserves buying it, but I think there are other much more interesting FPGA kits for about the same price out there.
For example look for Terasic kits.

BTW, I would like to hear also how succesful was the Hydra board for Parallax.

The Xilinx/Digilent FPGA kits are very good value.
