How to connect 12V motors with larger diameter wire to Pololu Motor Controller

Hi,
Let me preface my question by saying I still consider myself a newbie to the hobby even though I've been tinkering with motors, servos, etc. on the BoE for a few months now.
But now, I've moved on and am trying to autonomously control some of my older R/C cars.
So my question is how to properly connect larger voltage motors to my Pololu Motor controller which is connected to the breadboard on the Board of Education.
I've been able to hook everything up just fine for 6V motors, but that's using 22 ga wire. These 12V motors seem to use much larger diameter wire, such as 16 ga, which won't fit in the Breadboard.
Any tips or help would be much appreciated!
Thanks,
Mike
