Is this possible, or do I need a separate 5V power supply for programming the chip?·

    Steel,

no matter which type of Blitz you are using (serial or USB) you will need a separate 5V power supply for the Blitz, and you must isolate the Vdd pin on the Blitz from the target SX device.

Parallax once sold a device called SX Ring but I think it is no longer available. You could build something similar with just a few components, or use the SX-Key USB which comes with an isolated Vdd pin per-se, taking its 5V supply from the USB port.
