Washington State isn't really walnut country, but we do have at least one tree here in town, and the local crow population loves walnuts. I say "loves" because the effort they expend getting them open can't possibly be offset by the energy they receive by eating them. A crow will fly repeatedly into the air with one, dropping it onto the pavement below until it cracks open. (The smarter ones simply position their snack in the street and wait for an oncoming car to run over it. They risk having it swiped by a competitor, though.)

I'd vote for March or April, when I5 through the Siskiyous is less likely to be snowy. Mid February for the Prop I intro was a bit dicey.
