Controlling Stepper Motors

I have a ton of stpper motors of various sizes. The one's I want to play with·in particular pull about 1A @ 12V. What is the best way of controlling these? I'll be using a Propeller to do the signaling, but as far as power goes, is there any special methods of controlling these to achieve maximum speed? I am only able to get these going at about 1800 steps/second, reliably. I can't provide any specs on these since they are kind of old, other than they are a NEMA 23 size motor.
