Serial LCD reset option?

hello all,
i just got my serial LCD, worked fine out of the package. i had it wired to a project on the pro-dev board and i had a short now the thing only shows up the 1st row and its all black boxes, even when its in "test" mode. did i fry the thing or is there some sort of reset option im not aware of. thank you so much for any help!

    Sounds like you just need to adjust the contrast - there should be a pot on your Pro-Development board.

    My own experience with shorts and LCDs is that you may indeed have damaged the unit beyond repair.

    A few years ago I bought locally what appeared to be pin compatible parallel LCDs to the Parallax/Hitachi units. I found out the hard way that only the Vdd and Vss were reversed.

    In that instance, one momentary reverse pretty much ruined the unit and produced the same kind of output that you are getting. Unless there is an internal diode protecting reversal, the unit becomes forever useless.

    The parallel units do have an initialization procedure, but that didn't help as I suspect the memory for the characters is what actually gets fried first. Since yours is a serial unit, I suspect that there isn't much to do. You can try restarting the unit in the usual manner, but you may have 'bricked' the unit.
