Easy Easy SD card reader

Thought this came out well. I grabbed a SMD prototyping board from fry's (2 or 3 bucks) and took apart an old SD card reader I had. Used a heat gun to remove the card slot from the old card reader and resoldered on to the prototyping board.

Looked thru one of OBC's PDF's and noted which pins aren't necessary and just took them out of the card slot.

Heatgun melted the plastic a little but, but it works just fine. I also dremelled the edge of the board to be flush with the card slot.

Nicely done! I tried to salvage one of those with a heat gun and melted it beyond usefulness.

While we're at it .... here's my adapter. A 2G microSD in a mini-microSD adapter with part of an old wire-wrap socket and some SMT resistors all secured with hot glue. Not a new idea, but very workable.

These are all novel and cool, but for novices, I highly recommend the Sparkfun breakout or some equivalents
that have been mentioned on this board. It will save you a lot of aggravation.

Personally, I'm a big fan of the one that Brian/uController.com has for sale..

His professional level SD adapter has served me well all year..

I think somebody said it will work without any resistors at all. Anybody tried this?

Well done, wished mine looked as nice.

I removed the sd card slot from my wife's broken mp3 player and placed it on a through hole breadboard, doesn't look pretty but it works.

I tend to agree that it's easier to order than to jury rig, especially for beginners. I like messing around with hardware, though.

Brian's SD reader is a few dollars cheaper + I like Brian more than SparkFun.

I melted a chunk of my carpet with a heatgun, trying to fix my xbox. BGA... Ugh.

Good job with the SMD's. I need to make an SMD toaster oven.

    back to basics
excess capacitor lead soldered directly to socket pins
then bent carefully and trimmed. plugs right into
Demoboard sans pullup resisters. works great.
