DIY pc board question

i have never done a diy etched pc board
so i figured that there are folks here that probably
either have or do.
how difficult is it?
is the result reasonably good?
what product would you suggest using?
the board i need will have a card slot edge with
10 fingers on .156" centers.
and the overall size about 5x5"
also is there a generic protoboard available with the card
slot fingers already in place? if i could find some of those
with just the fingers in place, i could piggy back a daughter board
(proto board) onto it easily and cleanly enough.
i am looking to get a bs2 into a cardslot and have the backplane, and carriers
already.
thanks guys

Dream it, design it, engineer it, build it, and
do what is necessary to make the damn thing work!

UPDATE: Professional resules in under an hour!! i cant believe that its that simple... Print . Iron, etch... now i must drill ! maybe its time to move on to smt.. it dosent look like much fun to drill these tiny holes..
Bottom line is total novice and professional results in less than an hour!!

will an inkjet work, or does it need to be a laser printer?
