What happened to the MAX7219?
![TC](https://forums.parallax.com/uploads/userpics/960/n1TI3FP1FAD2X.jpg)
I can not find anything on parallax's site about controling the MAX7219 with a BS2. It use to be there not to long ago. I am trying to find the Parallax Appkit write up.

I suspect that one reason you cannot find much is that the BasicStamp or the SX28 easily can handle a 4 digit LED display without any extra chip. I suspect that both could handle 8 digits too [in just takes 16 I/O pins unless you use a 3-to-8 chip to bring it down to 11 I/O pins]. Guenther's SX programing textbook shows how to do so. Adding the serial interface is done easily in software.
Of course the SX28 is a lot cheaper than a BasicStamp if you want an independent serial interface and a DIP package. Some serial formats would not even require a crystal.
In many ways, the SX28 is the Swiss Army Knife of ICs. You can make it perform the same function of many other dedicated hardware chips AND you can have it do its fundamental task as well. That is the whole idea behind the 'Virtual Peripheral' concept.
For instance, it can operate as a clock chip AND drive the 4 digit LED as a readout. You can also program it to operate as a complete modem.
So why buy tons of specialty hardware chips when you can create your own from the SX28 or SX48?
Take a look at SXlist.com for a lot of reference material and code examples.

It's sunny and warm here. It is always sunny and warm here.... (unless a typhoon blows through).
