Protoboard w/USB==Expanded features?

I'm pretty sure I already know the answer to this, but
I've got to ask... Is the onboard USB chip on the Protoboard
pretty much the same as the Propplug? In otherwords,
Any chance that we can do more than just program with this port?

    The USB Protoboard is essentially a PropPlug plus a Protoboard. There are no extra capabilities. It's the same FTDI chip ... a USB slave serial adapter. Were you hoping to get some kind of USB host interface? That's more complicated. You'd have to add the guts of a USB Memory Stick Datalogger ... a bit more complicated, more board area, a bit more expensive ... and you wouldn't get the "no fuss" USB to serial adapter.· You'd need some kind of driver and it couldn't download without a lot of extra parts.

    Well, some things I can think of that would be cool:

    1. Pull power from USB, rather than requiring an extra wall wart or 9V. Just plug it in and hack.

    2. Provide the ability to access the USB pins from prop pins or something like this, so the
    simple USB keyboard/mouse interface software running in the prop itself could be used.

    Bean (Hitt Consulting) has two Propeller boards (one new ... soon available) that will run off USB power.
