transistor help

I am new to electronics. I am working on a homework board. After reading several chapters in the book, I decided to experiment. Using a transistor and 12v battery cell, I was able to control the motor with my circuit and it worked perfectly. I would like to make a second circuit to control 2 wheels. My problem is that the transistor was from my junk pile and I have no clue what kind it is, so I can't buy another.
What kind of transistor is needed to be controlled by a homework board, with a 12v battery cell and a motor?
