newbie - communication failure (check power and serial)

Hello, I purchased the BS2 in kit form. My power supply is a 12VDC 1.5A wall transformer. Using the editor, I get the loop and echo with no problem. When I run the DEBUG "Hello World" program, I get an error message "communication failure, check power and serial" The VDD pin shows 4.97 VDC. My serial cable (straight through type) Checks out good. Any other obvious thing to check? Thank You.

    Your wiring and the orientation of the polarized components. Solder joints for not enough or too much solder, things like that.

    I've never built one, but I have breadboarded the·serial interface many times. For some reason, it takes me far longer than it should and I make many mistakes before I get it working.

    If it were me, I would quadruple-check that interface.
