I have a web cam I want to get on my bot (finally), the AC power pack says 5V 1 Amp. I've used a LM7805 several times but I don't want to use something that is "good enough" I don't want to shorten the life of my $150 camera over a $3 power supply. I'm running the 12 V motors from parallax from the same battery, I'm worried that power spikes might damage my camera. are these valid issues? would going to a switching power supply be better?

Thanks for any suggestion.

If you are worried about spikes you need to add transient suppressors to the supply. I use AVX Transguards for that sort of application. It would be a good idea to use a separate battery for the controller and camera.
