The "Board of Education" is the microcontroller board used in the BoeBot and this holds a Stamp module which has 16 I/O pins. Of these, 2 are used to control the wheel servo motors, 2 are normally used for "whiskers" for collision detection, and 4 are normally used for IR object / distance detection. You can add a variety of I/O Expanders using the breadboard area of the Board of Education from shift registers (covered in the StampWorks manual downloadable here:
www.parallax.com/Store/Microcontrollers/BASICStampModules/tabid/134/txtSearch/stampworks/List/1/ProductID/144/Default.aspx?SortField=ProductName%2cProductName
) to I2C I/O Expanders (discussed here:
www.parallax.com/Resources/NutsVoltsColumns/tabid/272/Default.aspx
in Columns #79 and #85).
