What is the voltage range of a Parallax standard servo?
I have a BS2 kit with Basic Stamp Homework board, and "What's a microcontroller" pamphlet.· A diagram in the pamphlet shows the servo connected to the "Vin" voltage strip, which I believe is 9v.

Check your diagram since that's not a good idea. Servos are generally designed to work with 4 or 5 NiCd or NiMH cell batteries (4 x 1.2V to 5 x 1.2V = 4.8V to 6.0V). They can also run off 4 x 1.5V alkaline cells = 6V. They're ok with a 7.2V NiMH battery pack, but higher voltages tend to cause increased arcing and increased wear from that on the brushes. 9V would cause much more wear and 9V batteries don't last long under heavy drain (like from servos). Because of the problems with increased load and wear, the servo was probably connected to Vin, but the assumption was that the Homework board would be running off an AC adapter with a maximum voltage of 7.5V under load.
