Hitachi Digital Compass Calibration

We are trying to calibrate the hitachi HM55B compass using the basicstamp code given on the·Parallax·spec sheet but after we've run the program and calibrated the compass, the results still seem to show that the calibration is way off.·Any ideas? How far away do we need to be·from metal objects, monitors, etc ? Also, I heard that the compass won't work correctly if does not stay level at all times, do anyone know if this is true? We will be attaching it to a helicopter so this could be an issue if true.

    I didn't get good results until I used the averaging algorithm in the calibration and testing. Even then, although it would sometimes be almost perfect, it would inexplicably wander off with further testing.
