Eagle : How to save a part in a Schematic or Layout as a library part

Hi,

I have some Schematics and Layout that contains some custom components.
How do I save these custom components in my library so I can edit and use them later in my own boards.

Thanks.

In the Contol Panel, find the part in the library tree. Right click and select Copy to Library.

    Paul,

The component is not yet in any library, so it can't be found in the part tree.
It only exists in SCH and BRD files.
I want to import it into a library.

I don't know much about Eagle, but if the part is in an existing design you can't import it into a library. You need the actual library files to import it. You could create your own parts based on the ones in the files you have, of course.

William, I am confused, how did the part end up in sch and brd files? You cannot create a new part in either format, but only in .lbr. If this is some file someone else has created, you cannot extract custom parts from sch or brd, you have to contact the original author and get the library they used. Or perhaps it's a library already availible at www.cadsoft.de

There are two ways to use Eagle.

One is the use parts exactly as they exist from the library and add new parts each time you cannot find something. This is the 'correct' way to use it. In order to do so, one has to learn how to create new parts for the library. Something I haven't yet mastered as the parts library is the most tedious part of learning any electronic CAD software. Also, in the beginning it is difficult to be sure that I am not creating duplicates under a different name.

The second way is to cheat a bit.
I just use a part that has similar function and footprint. These I completely re-lable in the schematic and the outcome is I have a board in less time. But I don't think you can simply copy these 'cheats' into the library. I suspect you have to start from scratch with the library part creating software.

    Eagle continues to improve.

The YouTube link is very helpful.

I like it, others balked and moved on to other stuff - but it isn't that hard.
