Is it hazardous to health?
Is there a way to "shield" from its effects?

Thanks.

There's some health info here en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electric_power_transmission There doesn't seem to be enough data to determine if there are any health concerns.

Many years ago, I lived in a house boat on a river and beneath some major tranmission lines.

I found that the hum from them to be unpleasant. But, their presence seems to also be a negative ambiance.

There may be no true health hazard, but one does find themselves feeling an eery kind of feeling at times. I guess it is partially the hum and in part, the knowing that if a wire were to fall, the event would be very dramatic.

Years later, I had a cousin wanting to buy a very nice home under some power lines. We talked about this and decided that there might be a problem with resale value.

How did the hum come about?
Is it due to the vibration of the wires themselves?

I live close enough to hear them hum and it seems to be a light air discharge sound as it increases during high static times and high humidity. also seem to have a feel for electricity, can almost locate ac fields without assistance, but then again, I may just be crazy

I really don't know where the hum originates from, but it is there.
It is affected by weather conditions.

CJ expresses the weirdness of it all quite well. One might say it is almost like living with a ghost. You cannot put your finger on what bothers you, but it remains ever present and most noticible at quiet moments of the day.

It really doesn't matter if it is health related or not. The discomfort is real and seriously makes owning a nearby home a bad investment. Of course, if you were looking to locate a pig farm, I wouldn't worry about it.

There was a company in my town (Eco Analyses) that was doing a long-term study in Russia on the effects of people living under high voltage power lines. It was more common there and people tended not to move. The study did show some long-term ill effects but it was difficult to determine which were directly linked to the presence of the lines. The director of the project died of a heart attack before the study was finished. He was the genius type who kept a lot of info in his head, and the project was not able to continue and lost it’s funding.
