basic stamps and cameras

I've noticed two posts recently about cameras, one was a sophisticated camera set up by PhiPi (if the cost isn't too high, I'd be interested in one of those too), and the other was by erco (the hotwheels guy). In the back of my mind are a few different applications for cameras - but lets start with a quick snapshot based on an event. I suppose I'm looking for hardware/approach leads that would give me an inexpensive way to gain a footing in this area.

Given that I'm still fairly uneducated about stamps, what's the cheapest way to begin fooling around with cameras?
If I were to branch out to a propeller (I picked up a propstick kit on ebay, which may have been the wrong starting place), would the recommendations change?

Thanks

Get yourself a disposable camera and hack into the switch so you can control the shutter then set up a trigger and test it out.

I know they sell cheap ($9) digital cameras with low res 360 x 192. I forgot where my brother got it but they are around.
