Hello everybody,
I have a question: How can i replace the basic stamp circuitry with the intention to make it cheaper for mass production.
I'm thinking of using a common microcontroller, but wich one will do a good job?

Thank you!.

An SX28 or SX48 cost a lot less than a Stamp.· You can program them with "SX/B".

Are you looking to replace a BASIC Stamp Module? If so, you could build the BASIC Stamp into the design using OEM parts. It would cost under $15.00 for that level of integration. Otherwise the SX is the next step, though your code would require some reformatting/reprogramming to run under SX/B on the SX. I hope this helps. Take care.

The BASIC Stamp is fabulous for prototypes and experimentation, but not at all competitive for mass production, unless you want to claim Parallax reprogramming compatability for end users.

There are many types of micros available, and your particular situation will dictate which one. How much memory, #of IOs, PCB type, manufacturer, volume, die vs flash (one-time-programming vs multiple-time programming). PIC and EMC chips are popular and some of the cheapest. In large volumes, you can get a 4-bit processor with 20K memory and 4-6 IO lines for 5 cents on a die that has to be bonded to your PCB and connected. SMT packages add price, but are easier to assemble.

In short, MANY variables, many prices, but a Stamp Stunt-Double shouldn't cost over 15-20 cents in reasonable volumes(over 10,000). Even if you add lots of memory (for digitized sound or other apps), you'll only be in the 30-50 cents range.
