can I run a flat screen TV with it as a second monitor or it it just for playing movies.· If so, what buttons do I push on this laptop to do it?· I can't make it work either way.

I know this question is not stamp related, but I think that is what the Sandbox forum is for?

Most laptops have a DVI connector, and most flat screen TVs have a DVI connector. Should be easy to connect them. Some laptops even have S-VIDEO out, which most modern TVs have jacks for.

That being said...You'll have to tell the computer to use it. In windows, go to the control panel, find the "Display settings" (should be under "appearance and themes" in Windows XP), you should see 2 screens - with a "1" and a "2", you can switch the display from screen to screen, or even stretch out your desktop across both screens.

For my HP laptop, I have a VGA output and an S-video output. To enable the VGA output there is a blue "fn" key down by the windows key and a display looking blue graphic on my f4 key. When the two are pressed it cycles the screen output between the 1)LCD, 2) LCD and Output, and 3) Output only. This setup for the VGA output is very common.
For S-Video outputs, I have seen it two ways. One method is using the graphics card utility that may have been installed on your laptop to change settings more advanced than what's in the display settings of control panel. There would be an option to turn on the TV output and it would be an NTSC version of your screen. The other methed is by auto-detection. When you plug in to the S-Video port, your graphics driver automatically turns on the output.

You should be able to use the S-Video output as a second monitor using one of these methods, but keep in mind that the quality of the image is degraded due to the format. I have a small PC connected to a 36" CRT TV and even with the resolution set down to 800x600 it is a little difficult to read the text on the desktop icons.

Forgive the obvious, but S-Video output generally wants an S-Video input. Some of the signals of a composite video have been separated out for the sake of quality enhancement. So if the flat screen TV offers an S-Video input, things are simple an life is good.

I suppose that if you need to you can recombine these, but that may be more of an analog project that a digital one.
