Color detection

Hi Peter,
I'm looking for a way to detect some colors. I'm doing an "inner" garden, starting from seeds. The system is managing the light, the heat, the water, the air, and so on. But those factors need to be adjusted depending on the plant status. When the seed is germinating, I want to detect the green color. When the flowers/fruits are coming, I want to detect the red color.
I toke a look at TCS230-DB Color Sensor, but seems that it's only able to detect on the very small area at 1 inch distance. I have to detect on a 2 feet by 1 foot area. If I place it at 12 inches, is it going to give me the overall light frequency of the whole picture?
Also, is there an easy way to connect this sensor to a Javelin?
