I suspect a bit of both. He has to jump off a mountain (or out of an airplane) just to get going and then start the jet engines as he adjusts from a free fall to a glide. If something goes wrong, he has to dump the wing and open a parachute before he is out of altitude.
Of course, there is alway a place in the military for such persons.
