Absolute Encoder input Compatibility BS2

Been thinking of a project for a robotic arm. I have huge steppers with gangs of holding torque. Would like to try and turn them into servos of some sort. I saw some encoders that seem to fit the bill. But am unsure thought I would post and poll for any input and advice. Thanks!

Actually, it's unusual to combine steppers with encoders. The advantage of steppers is that once you home the arm against a limiting microswitch, you know its exact position from subsequent "move" commands. You might not need encoders, especially with the serious holding torque you mention.
