sent msg to LCD 27977 using Parallax test program, get nothing HELP !!!

Paul--- Help!!!
We hook up the LCD27977 ok and got a good H/W test dip off - off
we down loaded parallax serLCDTest and SerialLCD, put them in the correct directory and sucessful compilied both.
we ran the program and get nothing displayed on the LCD. The LCD is new. Finally we hooked up a speaker to the output pin and got sound, so we know the test program is sending something out to the pin.
All we get displayed on the LCD when we run the program is the cursor, saying that the LCD seems to be able to display something.
We tried everything that we can think of,· and still no luck.
Can someone help us

Do you power the display directly from the javelin VDD output (pin21)
or do you use the board VDD?
The backlit lcd consumes 80mA.
