Perf board circuit design

I'm about to start my first project using perf board and I find laying out
the actual wiring and layout is ten times harder than laying out the
circuit diagram.

Anyone know of a program or guide to help you layout the physical
design of a circuit for perf board?

I heard of Eagle and other PCB design software but I'm not quite
ready to etch my own boards or order them done... is there anything
a bit simpler I could try out?

Both of those programs will allow you to draw your schematic and place outlines of the chips on a 'board'. You don't have to buy their board, just use the software to place the chips and such.

Google "stripboard" and check out this site for an example and free design software. There are others also.
