Velocity sensor

I need to interface a Ramsey Electronics SG7 radar gun kit with a computer serial port. I’m using a Parallax Basic Stamp 2 Homework kit (I also have access to a Board of Education USB Discovery kit) and an elproducts RS232 module. In my set-up I tapped into the 4518 dual BCD decade counter IC chip on the Ramsey readout circuit board and sent the eight outputs to Pins 8 to 15 on the Homework board. I then wrote a program that was meant to take pins 8 to 15 as inputs , then using SEROUT on pin 1 sequentially send the values to the Tx pin on the RS232 module. When I put a laptop computer into terminal mode and tried to collect field data, I didn’t get a readout just a flashing cursor on the laptop.

Since I’m new to microcontrollers and sensors, I’m in need of some guidance here. Apparently it is not as easy as just hooking up a bunch of modules, as I have been lead to believe. Has anyone tried to use a radar gun as a speed (velocity) sensor? Do I need more code to make the BS2 microcontroller talk to the RS232 module and laptop? Could someone point me to resources that I might use to solve the dilemma I’m having?

Thank you,

Student-T

I would first make sure the homework board is communicating with the laptop. Write a program that sends "hello" out the port on the board and make sure you are getting that.

It might be easier to start with the Debug command rather that serout. This way you know the debug command will work with your programming software.I would start with two debug commands one that says connected waits 10 seconds then your debug command, this way you can also change the program and stay connected using the serial cable.

    Thanks guys,

I made sure that I can communicate with the laptop using the Homework board. The debug command worked very nicely. I still would like to do the same thing with the BOE but instead of using a USB to serial conversion cable, I would like to go to a MAX232 module.

Also, has anyone used the Ramsey Electronics Personal Radar Gun. I need to know where to pick up the digital signal to send to the laptop.

    Digital signal from what?
If you mean the SG7, since it's a Ramsey Kit, is it possible that you could scan the schematic and upload that for everyone to look at?

    Hi Everyone,

I'm sorry that I have taken so long to reply to PJ Allen's request for a schematic of the SG-7 circuit from Ramsey Electronics. I thought it was in their pdf file on the radar gun, but I was mistaken. Please see the attachment for a scanned copy.

    Thanks,
    Dave D.
