Potentiometer in mouse - help needed

Hi everyone

Does anyone know how I could get a potentiometer to replace the phototransistor in a mouse.
Is there an IC or something that can generate the light pulses based on voltage level?

What do you need it for?

To do it you would need a differentiator to say when there was movement and than something to generate pulses whenever the voltage was > some value.

I need to interface a knob on a circuit I am working on with a software package that uses mouse input.

Don't know if these are available but it should give you an idea.

I just came across a problem.
I can't find any wireless keyboard and mice kits using rotary encoders for sale.
And I need it to be wireless and I also need the keyboard.

Interfacing a rotary encoder to an optical mouse seams nearly impossible. :-(

Have a knob on the back side of the panel, get an optical mouse, pull it apart and mount the optical sensor so that it can sense the rotation on the knob. No friction or wearing out of moving parts!
