reading timeout on USB connection with Javelin IDE

When I use an USB connection between the Javelin IDE and my prof. dev. board, I very often get a "reading timeout" error.
This never happens when I use a direct COM connection.
As today's laptops quite never have a COM port, how can I solve this problem?
