Is GPS accurate enough for this?

This project is in idea phase: (so don't get excited yet)

I'm curious what the accuracy of consumer GPS is, specifically the Parallax module.
How close to actual position am I? Better question would be if I take a note of an
exact position, then return to that position will the numbers match or be close?

I'm considering taking my Portable prop to the next level using my eyepiece screen
and GPS to create a simple game with virtual tasks in a real environment, say like
the local park. If I can make this work, I think that vision (LCD) glasses might be
the next step.

From the Parallax GPS Module user manual:

"On average, the Module has a +/-5 meter position accuracy and a +/-0.1 meter per second velocity accuracy."
It looks like most other GPS Modules are about the same....

I've never seen anything better than 2meter(6feet) accuracy, even with WaaS enabled.

Of course, if you can afford a differential ground-base http://www.oxts.co.uk/default.asp?pageRef=91 then you can get 'pretty good' accuracy...

    OBC,

I don't know your exact purpose, but....

one of my hobbies (when I have time) is called GeoCaching. Basically it's a high-tech scavenger hunt. People hide a waterproof container and record the GPS coordinates of where it's hidden. Then they post these coordinates to a website along with some hints and challenge people to find it. There's usually a log sheet to sign when you find it, and sometimes a prize(think gumball machine prizes) there's more to it also, see www.geocaching.com/ for more details.

We use handheld GPS units for this. and it usually gets you within 5-10 feet. So it depends on what your idea of "a simple game with virtual tasks in a real environment" is.

OBC, I checked your ZIP code on the Geocaching website, and there is about 2500 geocaches in your area! I bet this local park you had in mind will have a few Geocaches already!

    2500!?

    Sheesh!

They only list about 120 in my area...
And 8 of those are mine.
    My Geocaching nick is 'Gadgetman!'.
    (No surprise there)

I figured there'd be other Geocachers out there on this site. I haven't done it in a while as I lack the time. Now that the weather is getting better I might do some this summer.

I had always envisioned building a Robot that could lead me to the GPS coordinates......
