Parallax has tons of info on their web page on IR with the BoeBot, but everything is based on a universal IR remote configured as a SONY TELEVISION remote. There's no support for any other IR format. A universal remote is as little as $5.

See http://www.parallax.com/dl/docs/books/edu/IRRemoteBoebot.pdf·· That's·a big download, so cut to the chase at Appendix 1, page 159.

I've tried all of the codes in the appendix and none of them receive anything from my universal remote. Do I have to have the Sony remote for it to work?

    P.S. Thanks for posting!

No, but if you have a "Universal" remote, you MUST set it for a Sony protocol. Tell your 'remote' that it's controlling a Sony TV, and see what you get.

How do I tell it its controlling a Sony TV? I have a regular remote its not a universal if that would be easier.

Well, every "Universal" remote comes with a pamphlet, which has a large list of devices (TV's, VCR's, DVD players, Cable Boxes) the remote can be set for.

So, find a device made by Sony in that list (they make TV's, VCR's, DVD players) and using the procedure outlined in the pamphlet, set the "universal" remote so it can control a Sony TV set.

If you don't have that pamphlet any more, and can't find it, then buying a new universal remote that HAS the pamphlet is like $10 at Radio Shack.

On the other hand, if you DO have a Sony TV remote, you can use that.

Well I have the pamphlet. But the universal remote has to detect the TV or VCR or whatever your using it for. If it doesn't it won't work.
And it can't really detect the Boe-Bot.

Then it's not a "Universal" remote -- it sounds like a "Learning" remote. And to 'teach' it, you need an existing remote for the TV or whatever.

So, it's off to Radio Shack then?

But it has 4 buttons for programming different DVD's and VCR's. it has an AUX, DVD, CBL, and TV buttons, and we have it working for our DVD player and TV. Isn't that a Universal remote?

Unless your remote costs more than $30, it's a plain old universal remote that you configure with keycodes listed in the instructions. You don't need a real Sony TV to set it, although it would be useful to verify that the remote is obviously working. But it sounds like you're not getting any response from your Boe-bot, so you're not certain whether the problem is in the remote or the robot. It could be as little as your IR sensor being hooked up wrong, or damaged. You might have damaged the sensor if it was hooked up wrong even briefly. You can get a similar sensor at Radio Shack.

If I were you, I would read all the info from the link I sent you earlier. Go straight to Appendix A, and work slowly and carefully through the very first sample program called irremotecodecapture.bs2 . It shows you a live display of what codes the Stamp or robot is receiving on your PC. Even if your remote is not set to Sony TV, you will probably get some response to a few of the remote keys. Once you have that working, you can verify the Sony codes and fill in the rest.

I still can't get it to work. I now its not the reciever because it works in the other projects. Could I use a regular remote to work it?

If you keep asking the same question, and we give you an answer, and you then ask the same question, we begin to think you're not reading our responses.

So you need to give more data -- attach the BS2 code, tell us the brand name of the remote and where you got it, something. Otherwise, I've already given you all the ideas I have so far.

The brand name is NEXUS. I don't know were we got it cause it was a little while ago so... I've tried all of the stuff you are telling me but it still dosn't work. I tried the codes in the "IR Remote for the Boe-Bot" the "IrRemoteButtonDisplay" and "IrRemoteCodeCapture" In appendix A. But I think its my remote I think I may just have to buy a new one.·

So, when you get a new remote MAKE SURE it can output Sony codes.
