IR Detector burned out?

I recently soldered a couple of IR Dectectors to a circuit and they worked fine. However, when I removed them (soldering and wire cutters) and plugged them into the breadboard they don't seem to be working. Is it possible that I applied a little too much heat to them and burned them out? I already ordered some more but would like to know if I might have damaged them so that I can not do that again. Thanks.

It's certainly possible although most parts are pretty heat resistant. It's not likely to have been "a little too much" heat if that's the cause. You can also damage parts by pulling on their leads too hard or by connecting them backwards when they're reinstalled. They may also be reinstalled in the breadboard improperly. The main thing is to work carefully, be gentle with your components, and double check things before doing anything irrevocable or hard to undo.
